California has strict emissions standards for vehicles and only catalytic converters that are CARB-approved AND match the vehicles Test Group Number can be legally used. The Emissions Test Group Number is an identifier assigned to a vehicle based on its engine family and emissions certification and can typically be found under the hood on an Emissions Label. Different vehicles, even within the same year, make, model, and engine size may potentially have different group numbers, so it is important to check every vehicle individually. If an aftermarket converter is installed whose part number was not officially approved by CARB for the vehicle's group number, it will fail at its next SMOG test for being the incorrect part number, even if it physically fits the vehicle and the check engine is off.
